Soooo, I never remove the back strip and I just lay the thing on my bucket lid or tape it to
the side of my carboy, so I can remove it when it comes to cleaning time.

I have tested the actual wort temp to what is listed on the ferm tape. It has been reliable to 1 degree. Probably not as reliable as a calibrated themowell, but at $100 cheaper, you be the judge.

but is it to be trusted? Don't place infinite trust in one, but it sure is convenient.

I stick these to the side of my fermenter, then carefully place a piece of clear packing tape over them so you don't have to worry about it getting wet.
